Chapter 1 Activities

We recommend printing a copy of the directions for each activity before proceeding to the designated websites.

Activity A

Visit the official government website for No Child Left Behind at www.ed.gov/nclb/landing.jhtml?src=pb and view the video. First click on "Visit Our ESEA Page." Then click on "A Teacher's Guide to Fixing NCLB."

  1. According to the video, what percentage of high school students drop out?
  2. Summarize the main differences between NCLB 2002 and NCLB 2012.
  3. Predict how teachers' unions will react to the Obama version of NCLB.

Activity B

The Cave of Lascaux is a superior website and an excellent resource for socials studies, art, geosciences, and language arts. After you have had an opportunity to explore the site in French, Dutch, Spanish, or English, take the Virtual Visit to the Shaft of the Dead Man. The authors refer to the "narrative possibilities" in the cave. Could this represent the literacy of 17,000 years ago? If so, what is it that makes the literacy of today different from the literacy of Stone Age humans?
