Chapter 2 Activities

Activity A

Read The Ways of Counting by the Nigerian American Philip Emeagwali http://www.emeagwali.com/essays/technology/computing/history-of-computing-abacus-logarithm-eniac-supercomputers.html and find the answers to the following questions:

According to the author, how many computations can the human brain make at one time?

What was the purpose of Hollerith's Tabulating Machine (pictured in the article)?

 

Activity B

Using the link below as a resource, describe how you might use a blog or weblog with middle or high school students to enhance their literacy and/or their knowledge of your discipline. Your description should begin with a paragraph that provides an overall strategy or purpose and concludes with steps you would take to integrate the blog or weblog into the classroom environment. (A Google search for “literacy blogs” will provide you with many additional resources if you need them.)
