Insights in Biology represents an innovative approach to teaching and learning introductory biology. This new approach incorporates the traditional discipline-specific concepts with an emphasis on presenting concepts in depth and in context.
It develops conceptual connections through a story line that is relevant to students' lives, and uses inquiry-based activities that focus on process and thinking skills. Concepts coincide with current thinking in education about what biology students should know and be able to do; these concepts are organized in the new ways in the four units that constitute the curriculum.

Standards-based
Developers at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), selected concepts based on national science standards and coinciding with current thinking in education of what biology students should know.
Inquiry-Based
Insights in Biology is inquiry-based, activity-oriented, where students are able to spend a large portion of their time in lab activities. This program emphasizes the importance of extended investigation, deep understandings of biological concepts, and connections within biology.
Learning Experiences The student text is not like a traditional text. Chapters have been replaced by Learning Experiences that include readings & activities. The readings are from magazines, newspapers, books and original writings. Lab activities include lab experimentation, role playing, simulations, model building, concept mapping and research projects.
Conceptual Understanding
This curriculum supports student conceptual understanding by encouraging students to make connections among concepts and build on concepts learned in earlier learning experiences.
