The Hog Mollies books were created by the 2nd and 7 Foundation to help promote literacy with inner-city Ohio schools. The 2nd and 7 Foundation  helps promote literacy in disadvantaged students by raising money each year to purchase books for second graders.

In their first year, the foundation purchased enough books for every second grader at seven different schools in downtown Columbus, Ohio (that's how the foundation's name was born). The next year they doubled their reach by visiting 14 schools. The success has continued ever since, and a goal of the foundation is to hand out 50,000 books on their 10th year anniversary next year.

The 2nd and 7 Foundation is making news, read more here: The Lantern, 2008.

The 2nd and 7 Foundation targets schools based on socio-economic background and those who need help with literacy, so that young readers are enabled to become successful in the future.

Developing Skills in Those Less Fortunate

  • One in five children will manifest a significant reading disability
  • 88% of children who have difficulty reading at the end of first grade display similar difficulties at the end of fourth grade
  • 43% of those with the lowest literacy skills live in poverty.

These statistics are staggering. The generous and community-minded Ohio football athletes, Mike Vrabel of the Kansas City Chiefs, Luke Fickell and Ryan Miller, who created 2nd and 7 Foundation, have written a childrens book that teaches leadership through cooperation and gives back some hope to disadvantaged students. Kendall/Hunt is proud to help be a part of this collaboration by publishing these books!
