Just Released!

By its nature, dance seeks to defy confinement and boundaries, exploring pure movement, ritual, lifestyle, communication, tradition, self-expression, or high art. Traversing time, culture, and aesthetics, dance is not like a mathematical problem or a theory in science. You cannot always prove or disprove its usefulness or validity.

Experiencing Dance: A Creative Approach to Dance Appreciation examines the ever-changing culture of dance, provides a basic historical context and appreciation of dance as an art form, and provides the skills and tools related to encourage the reader continue to explore dance.

Experiencing Dance: A Creative Approach to Dance Appreciation:

  • Is created for introductory, university-level students or high school performing arts programs.
  • Explores cultural dance origins and definitions, ballet, modern, jazz, African, Indian, Native American, tap, hiphop, Japanese, improvisation, performance art, site-specific work, aesthetics, dance production, the creative process and current trends; exploring video dance, dance fusion, dance modalities, and dance movement therapy.
  • Examines how, in each culture and society, dance has paralleled and affected other art forms.
  • Includes supplementary video guide, vocabulary glossaries, suggested readings, video resource guide, a timeline of dance history dates, and a graph of basic ballet influences through time to help reinforce topics learned.
