Sensible Listening: The Key to Responsive Interaction is a proven, practical guide for effective listening. This texts helps students develop responsive interactions that are thoughtful, dynamic, and accurate by listening logically and reasonably—making sense—and second, by bringing all five senses into the listening process.

Sensible Listening is divided into two parts in a “theory-practice” format.

  • Part One—The Nature of Sensible Listening—explores the major theories and parameters of listening.
  • Part Two—Practicing Sensible Listening—simulates the actual activity.

Additionally, at the end of each chapter are Awareness Exercises. These assignments increase involvement and identity with chapter topics by helping students understand how listening principles are often at the center of everyday interactions. In addition to generating involvement with the aspects of listening, the responses to these exercises are excellent discussion starters and are useful for evaluating students’ grasp of the chapter content.
