Spatial ability is a critical, but often overlooked component of success in several STEM careers. We briefly explore research on the role that spatial thinking plays in STEM innovation and expertise. Participants engage in proven spatial investigations from the NSF-funded Project M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians and the Javits-funded Project M3: Mentoring Mathematical Minds.
Encouraging Students to Think Beyond the Text

Gifted students demonstrate mastery on 50% of the curriculum on the first day of school. The College of William & Mary gifted curriculum is designed to reach beyond these educational standards, allowing students to develop reasoning skills and higher-level thinking skills. Participants will explore ways to add depth to literature and guide students to be analytical thinkers, not just passive readers. They will take an intricate look at Paul’s elements of reasoning to develop critical thinking and skills of interpretation of literature using a literature web. Participants will investigate words with the vocabulary model designed for depth of knowledge and embrace questioning that enriches the discussion of the text as well as teaches students to analyze text. Participants will have opportunities to explore the William & Mary curriculum units along with the Navigators novel study guides. Handouts will be available.
