Yes, Math can be Creative and Innovative:  See M2 and M3 for Yourself!

Gifted students thrive with engaging ways of learning, and then with opportunities to explore newly opened avenues of inquiry and discovery. Mentoring Mathematical Minds’ (M3) authors and researchers offer students, for example, comparative investigations of Egyptian, Chinese, base 3 and base 10 number systems in order to decode a “MoLi stone”, and invite them to invent their own best number system.  Students in the Algebra strand replicate Guiness Book of World Records and ask them to set their own records. In Mentoring Young Mathematicians (M2), first grade students, while helping their animal (puppet) friends Imi and Zani, invent safety belts for their egg passengers, and test their results.  These are just a few of the examples of innovative lessons that ask students to act as professional mathematicians around Common Core concepts of math. Each lesson deepens and extends the mathematical understanding, while students grow in the use of mathematical vocabulary and oral and written communication, and solve challenging scenarios.  All lessons require participant discussion and clarification to solve motivating scenarios and tasks.  Multiple methods for solving the posed problems, and for creating new problems, allow for innovative thinking and defense. Teachers will experience several hands-on activities included in some of the units. At the end of the session, teachers will have become familiar with some of the research-based, award winning gifted curricula lessons from M2 and M3, as well as the teacher support and professional development provided in each unit.
