IM Math 6-8 Fostering Synthesis through Discourse
Join Kendall Hunt and Illustrative Mathematics for a special virtual professional learning opportunity designed just for grades 6–8 teachers. Led by IM-Certified® trainers, this session is perfect for educators who want more opportunities for planning an activity synthesis or an introduction to the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions
The purpose of this session is to use provided samples of student work to explore ways to plan and structure synthesizing discussions based on students sharing their ideas. Synthesis is a key part of a problem-based lesson.
This event will be limited to the first 25 attendees who sign up. After that, additional sign-ups will be added to a wait list in case any of the initial 25 attendees cannot attend. There is a minimum of 10 registrations per each grade band to run the event. If the minimum is not met, the event will be canceled. We will communicate with you if you have been added to the wait list or if there has been any cancelations.
Date: Monday August 11, 2025 Time: 1:00 -3:00 pm CST Location: Virtually via Zoom Cost: $200 each participant for 2 hours of training. The registration fee is non-refundable. This session is designed to help educators use sample student work to thoughtfully plan and facilitate synthesizing discussions that build on students’ ideas. These discussions are an essential component of a problem-based lesson structure.

This interactive three-part professional learning series equips elementary educators with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to implement Problem-Based Learning (PBL) effectively into their own mathematics classes.
Session 1: Explore the pedagogy of PBL, its benefits for student engagement and problem-solving, and practical applications/ examples for K-5 classrooms.
Session 2: Collaborate with educator peers to design a PBL lesson aligned with your curriculum, guided by facilitator support and proven strategies.
Session 3: Reflect on your implementation experience, share successes and challenges, and discover resources to sustain and expand PBL in your teaching practice.

Presenter: Lisa Packley is a 5th Grade Honors Teacher and a K-5 Instructional Technology Coach with more than 20 years of experience in education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Science in Reading from Benedictine University. She is also certified as a Reading Specialist and endorsed in both ESL and Gifted Education. Lisa has played a key role in the development and implementation of her district's gifted program, led professional development on best practices in mathematics instruction, and remains a passionate and dedicated classroom teacher. She is committed to problem-based learning, believing it fosters critical and creative thinking in students as they tackle real-world mathematical challenges. Lisa champions a classroom environment that fosters collaboration and innovation, inspiring students to view themselves as mathematicians and thinkers, while equipping them with essential skills for future success.
